GLENVIEW, IL — The Armenian National Committee (ANC) of Illinois is sponsoring an event on Saturday, April 26, 2003, commemorating the 88th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide from 1915 to 1923. The remembrance will begin at 7:30 pm, in the Shahnizarian Hall of the Armenian Community Center in Glenview.
The keynote speaker for this year's commemorative program is Yair Auron, Senior Lecturer in the field of contemporary Judaism and Genocide at the Open University of Israel and the Kibbutzim College of Education.
Auron's talk, "The Armenian Genocide: Historical Responses and Modern Recognition," will give an overview of the historical response of the Jewish people to the Armenian Genocide, as it occurred, and, presently, what steps Israel can take to proceed from denial to recognition.
His critically acclaimed book, The Banality of Indifference: Zionism and the Armenian Genocide, examined the attitudes of the Jewish community in Palestine and of the Zionist leadership toward the Armenian Genocide.
Auron is also the author of Between Paris and Jerusalem: Selected Passages of Contemporary Jewish Thought in France, Sensitivity to World Suffering: Genocide in the 20th Century, and We Are All German Jews: Jewish Radicals in France During the 60s and 70s.
In addition, he has published numerous articles and essays.
Dr. Auron recently finished a book-curriculum, The Pain of Knowledge: Reflections on Teaching the Holocaust and Genocide, for The Open University of Israel. He is currently working on another curriculum entitled Genocide which includes theoretical units regarding the phenomenon of genocide, as well as the analysis of case studies such as the Holocaust, the genocide of the Gypsies, the Armenian Genocide and other historical and contemporary genocides such as that of Rwanda, Tibet and the native population of the Americas.
His new book The Banality of Denial: Israel and the Armenian Genocide will be published in English by Transaction Publishers in May 2003.
The ANC of Illinois commemoration program is free and open to the public. For more information about this event, individuals are encouraged to contact Nishan Mekhdjian at ANC_IL@yahoo.com.
