PROVIDENCE, RI - Armenian National Committee of Rhode Island members were present at a fundraiser for Congressman James Langevin at the Convention Center in downtown Providence on February 28, 2005 to show their support for one of Hai Tahd’s closest friends in Congress. In recent polls conducted in the State of Rhode Island, according to The Providence Journal, Langevin is shown running ahead of the the incumbent Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee.
Stephen Mesrobian, member of the ANC of RI said, “The ANC of RI is very encouraged that Congressman Jim Langevin is giving serious consideration to entering the 2006 United States Senate race. The Congressman has been an ardent supporter of Armenian issues since he became Rhode Island’s Secretary of State and we would gladly support his candidacy to be our next Senator.”
The Armenian National Committee of America graded Langevin with an A+ for his staunch support on crucial issues to Armenian-Americans. Jim Langevin’s work on Capitol Hill has included co-sponsorship of House Resolution 193 recognizing the Armenian Genocide, and for H.R. 528, granting Armenia Permanent Normal Trade Relations. He has backed increases in U.S. aid to Armenia, and signed letters to President Bush urging him to recognize the Armenian Genocide. Langevin consistently participates in the ANCA’s Observance on Capital Hill.
In the past the ANC-RI has hosted the Langevin Steak-Fry Fundraiser held annually in September. Langevin will speak at the "Remembering Our Past, Educating Our Future", a Genocide Symposium being held on March 14th 2005 at Rhode Island College where the Congressman will lead one of the lecture sessions. "The Armenian Genocide is an historical fact, which the U.S. Government should officially recognize," said the Congressman.
Jim Langevin earned a graduate degree from Rhode Island College and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. After defeating a Republican incumbent, Langevin served two terms as Secretary of State in Rhode Island. In 2000, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. While in Congress, Langevin has worked to make health care more affordable, improve the quality of public education and help bring the benefits of economic growth to all Americans. In 2001, Langevin was appointed to the House Armed Services Committee.
The Armenian National Committee of America has graded Langevin’s opponent, Lincoln Chafee, with a C- for not supporting key Armenian issues. Despite repeated meetings with the Senator, numerous discussions with staff, countless phone calls, and hundreds of grassroots letters over the past several years, Lincoln Chafee neither co-sponsored Senate Resolution 164, which would have officially recognized the Armenian Genocide, nor participated in any of the ANCA's annual Genocide Observances on Capital Hill. He remains the only Senator from the New England to refuse to support Armenian Genocide recognition efforts in Congress.
Rhode Island Armenian-American voters are expected to cast their ballots in record numbers in November of 2006.
